Men Fashion: From Runway to Your Closet

By Jennifer Wasilewski

Ever year fashion designers and other fashion minded folk flock to cities like Paris and Milan to share in runway madness. Beautiful bodies strut up and down the catwalk showing off what fashion designers have worked so hard to put together. At home, while we sit in our casual wear we look to the trend setting fashion shows and ask "Who actually wears that?" The men and women that walk down the runway seem to be part of some awe inspiring vivid dream where people dawn the most ridiculous costumes. While you may not everything at the fashion shows on the street there are a few things that will make it out to your favorite clothing store. Here are a few of the outrageous men fashions that you can take to daily life.

1. Hammer Pants
If you think Hammer pants were a nightmare left to the early nineties think again. Apparently these ultra baggy pants were just something to legit for fashion designers to quit. Fashion designers are bringing these.

How You Can Wear It Though you may think hammer pants should be left to the late 80's, they are back in men's fashion and you can definitely pull them off. Stay away from the glitzy shiny pairs and go for ones that are a made from dark, no shine pair in black, brown, or gray, or dark blue and green. These colors make the hammer pants more acceptable and will look fashionable instead of outlandish.

2. Sheer

Want to be revealing without putting it out there? Sheer clothing isn't just for the ladies anymore. The runways were full of super thin tops to cover or barely cover the men that modeled them.

How You Can Wear It Your biggest concern is probably looking less than manly in sheer attire, but with the proper clothing you can pull this off easily. Look for sheer sweaters in solid colors and wear them over button down shirts or T-shirts. This allows you to still take part in this sexy trend without looking ridiculous. If you're really daring try wearing a sheer top to the beach or poolside as a cover up until you hit the water.

3. The Zipper In a strange attempt to bring back what I'm assuming is rock n roll attire fashion designers have gone zipper happy. Whether its shirts, coats, pants or shorts there are zippers everywhere. It seems function is not at the heart of this fashion statement since there are zippers in places you can barely reach let alone use.

How You Can Wear It Wearing zipper clad clothing can be a tricky feat. The key is to have enough zippers to rock the trend without having so many you stand out like a sore thumb caught in a zipper. While the zipper trend is seen in shirts, shorts, pants, and jackets, you may want to start with the jacket to test the waters.

4. Pajamas Who wouldn't love to go to work donning pajama bottom and slippers? Thanks to the wacky minds of America's top men's fashion designers your dreams are now realized. Silk, flannel, and cotton pants have somehow worked their way out of the bedroom and on to the runway.

How You Can Wear It The pajama look is a lot easier to pull off this spring than you would think. Stick with the semi casual pajama trends like cotton striped pants paired with a button down polo and you'll be comfortable and fashionable. Stay away from silk printed pairs or the I just rolled out of bed wrinkled look.

5. Cropped Pants If only you had the fashion foresight to hold on to those high-waters when you mom told you you were to old to wear them. Cropped pants are all the rage for men this spring with hemlines making a movement upwards.

How You Can Wear It The capri pants is probably the hardest trend for men to get past. It seems like that little bit of ankle and lower calf should be left to the ladies out. Look for Cropped Pants that rise a few inches above the ankle and stick to khaki like materials in neutral colors like tan, green, and brown. These are great for beach wear so pair them with a t-shirt and sandals.

Man Fashion: Men's Bermuda vs. Men's Capri Pants

Some of the men fashion designers have launched their 2008 Spring Collection and for some of leading men fashion designers' brands like DKNY and Ralph Lauren have focus on Men's Bermuda and Men's Capri Pants.

So here is some simple explanation on how to differentiate between Men's Bermuda and Men's Capri Pants.

Ralph Lauren's 2008 Spring Collection

Men's Bermuda Shorts

Men Bermuda Shorts are a particular type of short trousers, now widely worn as casual attire by both men. The hem can be cuffed or un-cuffed, around one inch above the knee.

They are so-named because this men fashion style has been made populated in Bermuda, a British Overseas Territory, where they are considered appropriate men business attire when made of suit-like material and worn with knee-length socks, a dress shirt, tie, and blazer. They are available in a variety of colors, including many pastel shades as well as darker shades.

DKNY's 2008 Spring Collection

True Men's Bermuda shorts are not to be confused with "clam diggers" or "capri pants" extending below the knee. Cargo shorts may be a similar length, but are typically baggy or less "tailored" than Bermuda shorts.

Men's Capri Pants

Men Capri Pants are a style of pants usually worn in hot weather. They are designed to end mid-calf or just below the calf. More recently, the length of the pants has been shortened to just below the knee in some designs. Though capri pants are most popular with women, they have become popular among men fashion world in many tropical countries and Europe.

Man Fashion: Moschino Spring/Summer 2008

2008 Moschino's Man Fashion Spring/Summer Milan fashion week focus on this stripe sweater. I personally like this red strip sweater very much, it match well with black color pants. This is likely go well with white color khaki too.

White is still the main stream color in 2008 Spring/Summer Men Fashion trend, it's matched perfectly with striking color like orange or simple yellow.

Man Fashion: Eco-Fashion Trend

I am not a fan of leather products, I don't fancy about all the leather products like bags, wallets, etc. But there are many designers who insist on exploiting animals in the name of fashion. Looking at the latest fashion magazines, there are beautiful models clad in clothes made out of fur, leather, and suede. All the latest must have accessories are all made of animal materials. It seems that these items have somehow become a status symbol that screams high fashion.

Now, for those who are as much fashion conscientious as well as earth friendly, eco-friendly fashion is hitting the runways. Forget those past images of burlap sacks, hemp necklaces, and Birkenstocks, the new eco-fashion is rich with style and chic designs—all with the greatest amount of care and respect for our environment. So green is not just a color in fashion anymore - it's a conservationist's way of life.

Fashion weeks in both London and New York have promoted some of the hottest styles to date, all designed with eco-friendly fashion in mind.

For the first time in fashion history, designers Emily Santamore and Melissa Sack, founders of Moral Fervor, have created a clothing line with eco-fashion mindset that entirely uses Ingeo fabrics. Synthetic and sustainable, Ingeo fabric is made from fermented corn. Having a concern for both the environment and humanity, Moral Fervor donates a portion of its profits to a program, called Nutripia, which feeds women and children in Rwanda. (Too bad, men wear is not available yet)

Using organic cotton and hemp that’s harvested and manufactured without the use of pesticides or sweatshop labor, Pigeon Passenger has designed one of the most adaptable eco-fashion dresses of the season. Called the Nora Wrap Dress, it is both reversible and versatile. Custom-made for a Friday at the office, playful enough for a Sunday brunch, and sexy enough for a night out, the Nora Wrap Dress is the perfect eco-design for earth-friendly women on the go.

Ecoganik, a fashion design company that uses only certified organic and eco-friendly fabrics, has a steadfast mission to promote the use of eco-fashion such as pesticide-free and low-impact dye

fiber. And while their concern for the planet is foremost, they do not give up anything on style. With a fresh, casual-chic line, Ecoganik is not only environmentally conscientious, it’s in vogue. But too bad, so far they only focus on women wear.

Bono, with Ali Hewson, launched an earth-friendly collection under the company EDUN—nude spelled backwards—in 2005. One highlight of EDUN, whose mission is to use trade rather than aid to fight poverty and create maintainable communities throughout Africa and other developing countries, is a fig leaf charm. The charm, a silver-colored fig leaf that hangs by a thin, black rope, represents a return to nature and signifies copiousness.

Trendy, relaxed, and eco-friendly that’s Del Forte Denim jeans. These sexy jeans are made from 100 percent organic cotton and are sure to be the perfect fit for fashion savvy, environmentally friendly. Even big brand like Levi's, has launched their eco-friendly Levi's jeans too.

Sara Cross’ cruelnotcruel collection emphasizes the use of organic fabrics, while keeping classic style at the forefront. Cross, who is concerned with both the earth and labor, makes it a point to hire a group of indigenous Aymara women for all of her Alpaca wool designs. The Aymara women, who live in Bolivia, have a healthy work environment and fair compensation.

In today’s fashion world, “going green” does not mean giving up style. Environmentally-concerned designers have successfully combined style with eco-friendly fashion. With a flair for fashion, these designers have used their creativity to offer trend setters stylish earth-friendly attire.

So play your part today by start buying eco-fashion clothes.

Man Fashion Designer: Kenzo collection

Kenzo Takada (高田賢三) is a Japanese fashion designer. He is also the founder of Kenzo, a worldwide famous brand of perfumes, skincare products and clothes.
Kenzo's Designer Shirt and Tie

Kenzo's first designs started because he could only afford to buy his fabrics from flea sales, most of these fabrics were scraps, the remains of grandmothers sewing baskets. as a result Kenzo had to mix many bold fabrics together to make one garment.
Kenzo's Designer Shirts and Tie

Kenzo's success started in 1970: during this year he presented his first show at the Vivienne Gallery; his first store, "Jungle Jap" was opened; and one of his models appeared in the cover of ELLE. His collection was presented in New York and Tokyo in 1971. The next year, he won the Fashion Editor Club of Japan's prize. Kenzo proved his sense of dramatic appearance when, in 1978 and 1979, he held his shows in a circus tent, finishing with horsewomen performers wearing transparent uniforms and he himself riding an elephant.
Kenzo's Fashion Ties

His first men's collection was launched in 1983. In 1988, his women's perfume line began with Kenzo de Kenzo, Parfum d'été, Le monde est beau and L'eau de Kenzo. Kenzo pour Homme was his first men's perfume (1991).

New Men Collection from Bill Blass New York

The former men’s fashion director for Bergdorf Goodman, Michael Bastian launched his own menswear collection in 2006 after noticing a void in the men’s designer market for classic American apparel produced at a luxury level and with a modern fit. He was a 2007 nominee of the CFDA Newcomer Menswear Designer of the Year award, as well as a recently announced finalist for this year’s CFDA / Vogue Fashion Fund award. Attached here with his latest design for Spring 2008.“The opportunity to be part of the re-launch of the Bill Blass men’s line is incredibly exciting for me. He was always someone I greatly admired, and in my opinion, completely epitomized the idea of the American Gentleman – charming, engaging, caring, always beautifully put together, but in an approachable, loosened-tie sort of way. I am looking forward to reinterpreting these ideals for the modern customer,” said Bastian.Michael Bastian’s first collection with Bill Blass will be launched in Fall 2008.You can find out more from Bill Blass homepage.

Armani's 21 rules for achieving Style

1 A cheap pair of shoes is a false economy. Never skimp on staples: this is the basis of your wardrobe.

2 The work/life balance is the key to happiness for every man. I have sacrificed my life to my work, and if I could start again I would do things differently.

3 Black and dark navy are the most slimming colours. You can afford to be more adventurous with form and texture if you stick to this colour palette.

4 Never try too hard with what you wear: the most stylish men are those who look as if they are making the least effort. Ultimately fashion is about personal expression, and I don’t think anything can be called a fashion disaster if the wearer is being true to himself.

5 If you play sports intensively you will develop muscles in unusual places. Then you may have to consider bespoke tailoring. I recently started dressing the Chelsea football players and those guys are well built.

6 People say that I look 20 years younger than I am and ask, what’s my secret? Partly it’s genetic. My mother died at 90 but seemed like a woman of 65 at the time. I hope to be the same. But it’s also down to self-discipline: don’t go to bed too late; don’t drink too much; don’t smoke. And really understand and manage your inner self.

7 You can’t always get what you want, as Mick Jagger sang. Yes, I wanted to be tall and to have an important nose. Accept the hand you have been dealt and make the best of it. Don’t waste your life trying to change things you cannot change, and don’t dwell on them.

8 To look sexy as a man is a matter of confidence. It is a state of mind as much as a state of body.

9 Up to the age of 50 I didn’t think about my physique, then a friend told me to look out. Now I do an hour’s gym a day. Exercise lifts your mood and keeps you sharp. It helps you to focus and to feel comfortable in your own skin.

10 Some male role models endure. For me, Cary Grant is still the man – he managed to look good in a suit even while running across a field being chased by a plane. My friend George Clooney has that quality, too – he looks effortlessly smart whatever he is wearing. I’m flattered that he chooses to wear my designs.

11 The jacket is the basis of the male wardrobe. Always make sure that it is well made, fits properly and is lightly constructed so that it makes you feel comfortable and confident. Once a good jacket is in place, the rest of the outfit follows.

12 Good clothes can help to make you feel confident and improve your performance. I had a call from a friend who had bought the rugby team that he supported as a child. They were doing badly. He asked me to dress them, and I agreed. That friend was Russell Crowe and now his Australian rugby league team, the Rabbitohs, are winning again.

13 A reputation can be like handcuffs. I’m supposed to be a minimalist, so people complain if I do anything else. It’s best to keep them guessing.

14 You know more than you think, and you can do more than you know. When my business partner died in 1985, some people thought that I’d close the firm. Instead I learnt how to do his job. Never underestimate your inner strength.

15 Hollywood black-tie is the ubiquitous uniform for any evening occasion: black suit, white shirt and black tie. It’s a cliché but it’s true: every man looks good in black-tie.

16 Choose fabrics that are neutral in colour and not too ostentatiously patterned – that way they will have a longer lifespan (from a fashion perspective).

17 Today it’s increasingly the accessories that make the man, so invest in good shoes, belts, bags, ties and the like, and you’ll be able to reinvent your outfits over and over again. Be aware of what colours you wear and buy accordingly, but always remember that you can wear either black or brown with grey. Your watch is one of the most important things you will buy; it says a lot about you as a man. I wear my own Borgo 21 watch, which I treasure.

18 A well-chosen fragrance can become a distinguishing characteristic. It is the first thing that people sense when you enter a room and the last thing as you leave.

19 You should have the courage of your convictions. When I first experimented with deconstructing tailoring, it went against the prevailing ideas and methods. But I simply wanted to make clothes that allowed you to look smart and be comfortable at the same time. In the end, my ideas caught on. Now men demand comfort from their tailored clothes.

20 I am happy to see that today there is a desire among men to be more elegant again. Grunge was not a good moment for me. Elegance is the key, I believe, to achieving a timeless look – something that does not date, and does not date you. I attribute my success to remaining true to this philosophy. To me, style is more important than transient trends.

21 No matter how hard I try, I will never persuade Sam Jackson to appear without a hat!
